Barry McDermott (1950)

McDermott earned the Seely Johnston trophy as the outstanding athlete at Champaign High School in 1949-50, largely on the basis of his football and basketball achievements. Starting tackle on an undefeated conference champion in 1949, earning Big 12 Conference first-team honors. Also selected first-team All-State by the Chicago Daily News. In 1951, he was voted to the all-time Champaign all-star football team. A two-year starting forward on the basketball squad, he was chosen by teammates as the player of the year as a senior. As a junior, he won the discus throw at the district track meet to qualify for the state event at Memorial Stadium. He played baseball as a senior and earned starting the starting third-base job.
