Cary Colwell (1977)

Colwell earned 2 letters in swimming and 2 letters in track. Colwell was the 1976 Big 12 high jump champion. As a senior, he ranked 4th in the state indoor high jump with a jump of 6’6”. He was the Big 12 high jump champion with a jump of 6’8 ¾”, which is Central’s school record. He was the district runner-up and placed 4th in IHSA State Finals. Colwell was a dominant swimmer for Central Maroons. He was an All State Honorable Mention in the 200 medley relay in 1976. He placed 6th in the medley relay, 9th in 50 free and 7th in 400 free relay in 1976. He was a member of the All-State 200 medley relay team and 400 free relay team in 1977. In 1977, he was an All-American (top 30 in the nation) in the 200 medley relay, 50 freestyle, and 400 free relay. He placed 2nd in the medley relay, 7th in the 50 freestyle and 4th in the 400 free relay. As a freshman at the University of Illinois, he lettered in track and swimming. At Parkland he set an indoor record at 6’10” and placed at the National meet, and then at Eastern Illinois he earned 2 letters in track.
