Dale Foster (1951)

Dale Foster was chosen as the school's Athlete of the Year after his outstanding senior year in 1950-51. A 5-10, 145-pound scatback, he led the football team in scoring with 13 touchdowns, six from pass receptions. Major picked Foster and Bobby Clark as the running backs for the all-star team from the first 50 years of Champaign football. The maroons swept to a pair of conference championships in Fosters two seasons as a starter, posting 7-1 and 7-2 records. In his senior year, the closest conference game was a 33-12 rout of Urbana. In track, Foster cracked the school record in the pole vault with a mark of 13-1/4, the fourth highest vault in the country at that time. He finished fourth in the state meet as a junior and third as a senior. His greatest success in the pole vault came at Illinois. He tied for first in the Big Ten in 1954 and won the title outright in 1955 with a vault of 14-1. He even tried playing football for Illinois at his size, earning a letter as a sophomore.
