Dan Howard (1917)

Mr. Howard was a prominent athlete at both Central and the University of Illinois. As a prep athlete, he was an All-State quarterback in 1916 and 1917 and in some areas ranked ahead of Dutch Sternaman, who later quarterbacked the fighting Illini under coach Robert Zuppke. He also lettered in basketball the same years and played in the 1917 state championship with Hubbard. His best event in track was the pole vault, but he also competed in the hurdles and high jump. After graduating from high school, and a stint in WWI as a second lieutenant, he returned home and entered the University of Illinois, where he lettered in football and track.
