Dick Paterson (1945)

Dick Paterson was named Champaign High outstanding athlete of the year in 1945. He also earned six letters, was captain of the football and track teams and was voted on the UPI All-Tournament second team at the State basketball tournament. Paterson was the right halfback for a 3-6 team his senior year, carrying 87 times for 632 yards and a 7.3 average. He was the leading scorer and ground gainer on that team, as well as the punter and PAT man. As a junior, he was a first-string guard on the 31-6 basketball team which finished fourth in State. In his senior year, his team finished second in the State with a 34-2 record and he ended up with a 7.5 average. Paterson, as a track man, competed on the first District winner at CHS and was captain his senior year when the Maroons won their first Big 12 title. His mile relay team set a school record and was the second fastest in the State as a junior. The track team was undefeated except in State competition his last year. He scored 11 of the team's 39 3/4 points in the Big 12 meet by winning the high jump, placing second in the 880-yard run and fourth in the broad jump. Paterson attended the University of Illinois and earned a varsity letter in basketball.
