Don Weller (1946)

Don Weller transferred to Champaign High School from Urbana prior to his junior year and earned five letters. One of the top wrestlers in school history, he lost one match (state semifinals) his junior year, then went undefeated and won Big 12, sectional and state titles at 138 pounds to help Champaign take fifth at state in 1945-46. Weller earned two letters in football, starting at right halfback in 1945 as the famed "Pony Backs" established school records for rushing yards. He earned one letter in track. Weller received the Seely Johnston Outstanding Athlete Award in 1946 and later earned a degree in chemistry from Illinois.
