Ed Schalk (1929)

Ed Schalk earned three varsity football letters in football and two letters in track. In football, as a sophomore he played halfback, kicker and often times played quarterback. He led CHS in scoring during the 1927 campaign and helped lead the Maroons to an undefeated conference title. As a junior, he was one of the most consistent ground gainers and was voted captain of the team as a senior. During his senior season, Schalk again led the Maroons to an undefeated conference crown and the team finished the season with a 9-0 record, outscoring their opponents 152-31, including six shutouts. In a game against Louisville Male, Ed returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown. Schalk scored ten touchdowns during the season en route to earning All-Conference honors. It was later learned that CHS was forced to forfeit all nine games because a 21-year old suited up for the Maroons. During his three-year football career, CHS compiled an on-the-field record of 25-2.
