Hunter Russell (1929)

Hunter Russell was a standout performer in football and track. He earned two varsity letters in football and track and one letter in swimming. He led the track team to a second place District finish in 1928 by winning the 50-yard dash and the 100-yard dash. He also anchored the second place 880-yard relay team. Russell placed 5th in the 50-yard dash at 1928 state meet. In 1929, Russell was a member of the 880-yard relay team that set the school record. He was an All-Big 12 Conference selection at left halfback in 1928. The Maroons finished the season 9-0 and outscored its opponents 152-31, allowing points in just three games. Russell scored at least one touchdown except two. CHS won the Big 12 Conference in a fairytale season that ended sadly because a senior member of the squad was 21 years old and that caused the champs to forfeit the nine games in which he played. Following graduation, he attended the University of Illinois where he earned two varsity football letters at split end.
