      Jack Moore (1940)

Jack Moore won a six letters at CHS, two each in football, basketball and track. He was called "Handy Man" by former coach Les Moyer for his play at end and quarterback. In basketball, Moore played guard for two years in 1939 and 1940 with CHS making the state tournament each year. In baseball he was a third baseman his junior and senior years and CHS advanced to the Illinois State baseball tournament before bowing in the final game. He was a leading hitter for the Maroons in their state tourney bid with eight hits, including two doubles and a triple while driving in six runs and batting .571 in three games. He hit .398 during his senior season. Moore was picked on that All-Tournament team and received many comments from major league scouts. Moore enrolled at the University of Illinois and played third base on the freshman team. During WWII, he was a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and flew 35 missions over Germany as a pilot.
