Janelle Johnson (1998)

 

Janelle Johnson earned nine varsity letters, four in track and field, three in basketball and two in volleyball. She was one of the premiere long and triple jumpers in the state. She placed in each event twice at the state finals. In her junior year, Janelle finished seventh in each event and as a senior finished eighth in the long jump and third in the triple jump. In basketball, Janelle was able to do it all. As a sophomore she led the team in rebounding and assists and was third in scoring. As a senior, she led the team in scoring, blocked shots (80), rebounds and steals. She scored over 500 points and grabbed over 500 rebounds in her career. She earned All-Tournament recognition each year at the Centennial Thanksgiving Tournament and was named to the All-Tournament at the Charleston Holiday Tournament as a senior. She also earned All-Conference and All-Area recognition. Janelle was named the Seely Johnston Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year in 1998. She attended Purdue University on a track scholarship where she won multiple meets in the long and triple jump for the Boilermakers. As a senior, she was earned the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars Award in recognition of her academic, athletic and community service achievement.
