John Baxter (1921)

John Baxter spent a tour of duty in World War I before starring in football and track at Champaign. He was a powerful tackle on the 1920 Champaign football squad that went 7-0 and outscored the opposition 198-14. He switched to fullback the next season and was the main running threat for another fine team. Baxter made his mark in track in the 1920 season. He won the 50 and 100-yard dashes and was a member of the winning 880-yard relay team as the Maroons captured the 1921 track and field team title. He is considered one of the school's all-time track and field greats. After leaving school, he played catcher 10 years for the semi-pro Giants baseball team that played in the old Commercial league at West End Park.
