John Heath (1924)
John Heath was a star halfback and
record-breaking track and field competitor. He played on the 1923
football team and had a short but brilliant career with the Maroons
after transferring from Monticello at the semester break of junior year.
Heath finished fifth in the state high hurdles that first semester, then
ran wild as a halfback in the fall of 1923. He was the 'whole show' in a
13-0 victory over Urbana, passing and running. Heath's 35-yard field
goal beat Terre Haute Wiley in a 17-14 contest, stamping his
triple-threat abilities. In 1924, he established a state meet record of
183-9 in the javelin (12 feet past the previous record) and finished
second in the high hurdles finals. Heath went on to be an outstanding
college athlete at High Point (N.C.), captaining and starring for a
championship team his senior year.
