John Johnson (1966)

 

John Johnson was named Seely Johnston Athlete of the Year in 1966. John participated in both track and basketball, earning two varsity letters in basketball and three in track. His greatest achievement was winning the high hurdles at the State Track Meet. His time of 14.2 seconds eclipsed Hall of Famer Mike Butler's school record of 14.6, established the previous year. Johnson's time also tied the state record in the high hurdles. In his senior season, Johnson was also a double winner in the conference meet in the 120-yard high hurdles (14.6 seconds) and the 180-yard lows (20.0 seconds). At the District meet, John won the high hurdles in the 14.8 seconds and finished second in the lows in 20.1 seconds. Johnson finished fourth in state in the high hurdles as a junior. In basketball, as a forward, John was the leading rebounder (8.2 rpg), third leading scorer (8.1 ppg), and earned second-team All-Conference recognition.
