John Pickens (1921)

John Pickens was awarded six letters before his 1921 graduation from Champaign. He was also a standout in football , basketball, and track. In football, Pickens played on four undefeated teams at Champaign and was selected to a number of All-State teams as a halfback during the 1920 season. His coaches described him as a powerful runner, a good blocker, and a "good team man". In basketball, Pickens was a guard who played only one season but was chosen honorable mention on an All-State team. In track, Pickens was a member of the 1921 state championship team and captured first in the 440-yard dash and ran a leg on the 880-yard state champion relay team.
