Robert Walters (1942)

Robert Walters proved one of the school's most popular athletes, as "Buddy" made it a point to excel in all branches of athletics which he undertook. Buddy played football, basketball, track and baseball in his sophomore, junior and senior years, being captain of the baseball team in his senior year. In his sophomore and junior years he played golf. Buddy set the all-time high scoring record in basketball at forward for Champaign High School with 26 points in a single game, and was also high scorer for the season in his senior year. He was on the school's 880-yard relay team, taking fourth place in the 1942 State Interscholastic Track Meet. He captained the 1942 baseball team, which was one of the eight best in the state, losing to Streator 7-4 in the state tournament. He led the baseball team in hitting in 1941 and 1942 with averages of .485 and .477. He played halfback and end on the football team in 1939; fullback in 1940, and high scorer in 1941 at right halfback.
